Late in 1889, a group of Carpatho-Rusin people attending the German American Roman Catholic Church in Trenton, New Jersey sought to participate in an occasional Liturgy and to receive the Sacraments according to their own Greek Catholic (now Byzantine) Rite.
The church came about as a result of the growth of the Tabernacle Church in Columbus. Organized in 1855, they were outgrowing their old church built in 1878 which was a half block north on the west side of Lafayette Street towards the rear of the current library building.
