Immediately to the west of the Sacred Heart Transept, near the north entrance, is the Cathedral’s Baptismal Font. Its placement near the front of the church is a reminder to all the faithful that we have been united in Christ through the Sacrament of Baptism.

The baptismal font is usually the most controversial piece of furniture in the church, especially its placement in the church. While it may seem nice to have a font that looks and acts like the Jordan River, the main rule to follow with a baptismal font is simplicity.
Pictured is a custom designed cast bronze baptismal font bowl. The bowl was designed and made by Wanner Sculpture Studio. Water Structures LLC has partnered with Wanner Sculpture Studio to design and produce the equipment used to make Wanner’s bronze bowls work as baptismal fonts.

The baptismal font is pictured in the Church of St. Peter and Paul in Eisleben, Germany, 16 July 2012. Martin Luther was baptized in this font on 11 November 1483.

The Bronze baptismal font (German: Bronzetaufe) in the Hildesheim Cathedral is a late Romanesque baptismal font which was probably made in Hildesheim in the first third of the thirteenth century.
The present Baptismal Font is one of many used since 1876 when the Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist opened at its present location. Symbols on the Baptismal Font match the panels on the front of the Main Altar. Molds were made of the Reredos designs and sent to Carrara, Italy where replicas were made.
